I’m picking up on words here and there and working hard to talk with my host mom. Here is us eating breakfast together! She made huevos fritas con arroz y café.
Here are a couple pictures of the house that I’m staying in. I have my own bedroom with an outlet and a lightbulb! (Hallelujah!) I also have a double sized bed and a rack to hang my clothes on. Here my host dad is helping me out up my mosquito net. And this is Enzo, one of the dogs that wanders the property. This is the bathroom that we all share. I have running water too which has been amazing. And since it’s so hot and humid, these cold showers have been god sent. There’s also chickens and other dogs running all throughout the property and they love to make noise during the night so it makes it impossible to sleep. Everyone can hear everything!
There is so much that has happened in the last couple days it will be tough to cover it all. I had iguana for the first time! Skin and everything. The meat is very tough and flavorless. You need a good sauce to go with it. The weird things in the bowl are harvested iguana eggs that my host mom dries and then eat! I asked if she caught them herself and she told me her son caught them with his sling shot!
Here I am in machete class. I got to help sharpen my machete and then practice with it in the field!
Apparently you can take these with you on public transportation. Just sling it on your back!
Some of the other volunteers and I went for a walk with our host brother and got thirsty, so we stopped at la tienda and he so graciously bought all of us cola! I’m not much of a soda drinker but this was delicious! Much better than the soda back home.
Here we all got the chance to enjoy the community pool together with some of the locals. It’s not heated but the water felt great!
